If there is one snack that has taken over the world, it is the Empanada. From the streets of Buenos Aires to the markets of Madrid, this stuffed pastry is a global favorite. But have you ever tried Peruvian Empanadas? With their crispy dough and filling spiced with Andean flavors, they are a delicacy that is becoming increasingly popular in the Netherlands and all over Europe.

What makes Peruvian Empanadas so special? Where can you try them in the Netherlands? Find out here.

Where Do Empanadas Come From?

Empanadas have an ancient history. It is believed that their origins trace back to Mediterranean civilizations, where Egyptians and Greeks prepared dough filled with meat and spices. The Arabs brought this tradition to Spain, where it evolved into the Iberian empanada. When the colonists arrived in the Americas, the recipe was combined with local ingredients, leading to unique variations in different countries.

In Peru, Empanadas were a luxury during colonial times, served in monasteries and aristocratic homes. Over time, they became a popular dish in bakeries and markets, adapting to the rich Peruvian flavors.

What Makes Peruvian Empanadas Different?

Each Latin American country has its own version of empanadas:

  • Argentina: Soft dough with fillings of meat, egg, and spices.
  • Chile: “Pino” empanadas with meat, egg, and olives, with a slightly sweet touch.
  • Colombia and Venezuela: Fried corn dough with various fillings.
  • Ecuador: “Empanadas de viento” filled with cheese and sprinkled with sugar.

Peruvian empanadas have a unique identity. Their dough is light and crispy, with a subtle sweetness that balances the filling. What truly sets them apart is the combination of Peruvian ingredients: seasoned meat with ají panca, raisins, hard-boiled egg, and olives. Additionally, Peruvians have a special habit: they eat their empanadas with a squeeze of lime juice to enhance the flavor.

Marcia Paredes, owner of Marcia’s Cakes & More in Tilburg, shares her experience:

For me, Peruvian empanadas are more than just a bite; their crispy dough and well-seasoned filling make them irresistible. Perfect for any occasion, whether on the go or with friends, they stand out for their unique flavor, much more intense and varied than other empanadas.

Peruvian Empanadas and European Cuisine

Empanadas are not exclusive to Latin America. In Russia, chebureki are a fried version with spiced meat. In India, samosas are similar in technique to empanadas but filled with vegetables and spices. In the Balkans, börek is made with phyllo dough and filled with cheese or meat.

In the Netherlands, there are similar snacks, such as pasteitjes, although the fillings and textures differ. Still, Peruvian empanadas offer a unique flavor combination that is worth trying for food lovers.

Why Should the Dutch Try Peruvian Empanadas?

The Netherlands has a diverse food culture and is open to new flavors. With the growing interest in Peruvian cuisine, empanadas are a perfect option for those looking to try something new and delicious.

  1. Perfect flavor balance: Sweet, salty, sour, and a hint of spice in every bite.
  2. Versatility: Ideal as a snack, lunch, or to share with friends.
  3. Something for everyone: Classic with meat, chicken, cheese, or vegetarian versions with mushrooms and spinach.

Daniella Jauregui, owner of Misky Mikuy in Rotterdam, says:

“In the Netherlands, there are many fast food options, but few with the rich flavors of a Peruvian empanada. It’s time for the Dutch to discover them.”

Interest in Peruvian cuisine has grown in Europe in recent years. Dishes like Ceviche and Lomo Saltado have already won over palates, and Peruvian empanadas have every potential to follow suit.
